Functional classification is the process by which streets and highways are grouped into classes, or systems, according to the role it plays in the overall system of the local, state and nation’s street and highway network. It determines how travel is "directed" within the roadway system by defining the part that each road or street plays in serving the flow of traffic through a highway network. It is a hierarchical system of classification that helps to ensure a comprehensive roadway system that provides logical connectivity and continuity across the entire network.
The Memphis MPO's webmap includes all Functionally Classified roads (Minor Collector or greater) for the Memphis MPO Region and is the most recent FHWA-approved functional classification for roads within the MPO's planning area. Each State DOT is responsible for updating its respective maps and may lag behind the authoritative classifications as approved by FHWA.
