2021-2023 Integrating Performance-Based Planning into the MPO's Planning Process

- The Memphis MPO's efforts to integrate performance-based planning into its various plans, processes, and programs has been recognized by FHWA in several publications as a model practice. These publications include:
2018 Infrastructure for Rebuilding America (INFRA) – TDOT and Memphis MPO – National Award
US Department of Transportation (USDOT)
- The USDOT awarded $71.2 million under the INFRA grant program to TDOT and Memphis MPOs joint application for the upgrade of Lamar Ave. It was one of 26 projects selected from 235 communities, and the only one in Tennessee.
2018 National Award for Excellence in MPO Coordination and Partnership

The Association of Metropolitan Planning Organizations (AMPO) awarded the Memphis MPO the National Award for Excellence in MPO Coordination and Partnership for our strong collaborative projects and practices, such as the CPT-HSTP and our Regional Freight Plan.
2017 Transportation Planning Excellence Award
Federal Highway Administration and Federal Transit Administration
- The Coordinated Public Transit-Human Services Transportation Plan (CPT-HSTP) established a process to address the transportation needs of disadvantaged populations. This extensive and cooperative effort was named winner of the 2017 TPEA award by FHWA.
2017 Transportation Planning Capacity Building Case Study

- The MPO's public involvement efforts for the Livability 2040: Regional Transportation Plan (RTP) were recognized as a Case Study by FHWA's Transportation Planning Capacity Building (TPCB) Program. Strategies highlighted include the Livability YouTube Video Series and Public Transit Advertisements as unique ways of reaching a larger and broader range of residents.
2015 Bicycle-Pedestrian Count Technology Pilot Project

In 2015, the Memphis Urban Area MPO was selected as one of the ten (10) MPOs nationally to participate in the Federal Highway Administration's (FHWA) Bicycle and Pedestrian Count Technology Pilot Program. As part of that program, the Memphis MPO purchased three bicycle and three pedestrian counters.
2014 Addy Award - Citation of Excellence
American Advertising Federation - Knoxville Chapter
- The Brand Identity created by Hornsby Brand Design for the Memphis MPO was recognized at the American Advertising Federation (AAF) - Knoxville Chapter's premier event, the Addy Awards, for its cohesive brand look across all touchpoints.
2012 Outstanding Planning Award - Honorable Mention
American Planning Association - Tennessee Chapter
- The MPO’s second Regional Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan (completed in 2011) received an honorable mention for the Outstanding Planning Award from TAPA.
2012 Transportation Planning Excellence Award - Honorable Mention

- The Transportation Planning Excellence Awards program (TPEA) recognizes outstanding initiatives across the country to develop, plan, and implement innovative transportation planning practices. The 2011 Regional Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan received an honorable mention for this Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) award.
2005 Creative Plan or Document
American Planning Association - Tennessee Chapter
- The American Planning Association, Tennessee Chapter (TAPA) recognized the Memphis MPO’s Regional Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan in the “Creative Plan or Document” award category. This was the MPO’s first bicycle and pedestrian plan and set the foundation for growing active transportation planning in the region.
